It was her reaction that caused the muscles in his face to pull tight into a smile.

"All right, then," he said, motioning for her to follow him back to the kitchen, "You'll join me, yeah?"

Maybe in the back of his mind he thought she might disappear if he went by himself. All these once strange thoughts sometimes seemed so reasonable, but at least he wasn't feeding off of them as much as he usually would.
